"Lame"

Reader Robert found this photo posted in one of Lostcherry.com’s pages and would like to know what the phrase meant.

The top character means “very, too, much; big; extreme”, and the bottom one means “break wind; fart; buttocks”.

In Chinese slang, especially in internet lingo, 太屁 means “lame” or "pathetic".

Update: August 27, 2006 - According to the original website, the tattoo is supposed to be "fat ass".

If that is true, the top character should be , not .

  2. I can't imagine putting anything that says "屁" anywhere on my body, especially when it'll be permanent... although I can actually read it, so go figure O.o

  3. Wow. I'd love to know what the tattoo artist and/or owner thought it was.

  4. From the link, it seems the owner of the tat believes it to mean 'fat ass' as some kind of amusing joke; I prefer 'lame' as being a little more apt.

  5. I can only assume they wanted "Big Ass". Another "Crazy Diareha" where they'll claim it was intentional?

  6. I don't know about Chinese but in Japanese, 大 means "big" and 太 "fat". So "fat ass" is technically correct, but no one ever says that.

So yeah, I'll go with "lame".

  7. Yes. Maybe this person wants the whole world to know he has extreme farts. Lovely!

  8. 屁 in Japanaese is "he" meaning "fart," so even if they meant it to be 大, and they meant it to be Japanese instead of Chinese, it still wouldn't be the meaning they were after. As written, it makes no sense in Japanese at all.

I think the meaning it ended up having in Chinese is ironically perfect. Hahah.

  9. At least to a Japanese, the character 太屁 means "fat fart"....although there is no word like that in the Japanese vocabulary.A big ass would be 大尻and fat ass would be 太尻(although the Japanese would write it in combination with hiragana...大きい尻or太い尻).As for the word meaning "lame" in Chinese, only a Chinese person would know.

  10. actually "pi" (buttocks) can sometimes mean "bullshit" which is sometimes used (in Taiwanese slang) as "cocky" "pride" "arrogant"

Which I would personally interpret "too shit" as "too cocky".
